118 ILLEGAL TAXIS IMPOUNDED IN MAHIKENG

MMABATHO – The North West Provincial Traffic embarked on Public Transport Operation this past weekend where in total 501 vehicles were stopped and checked in Mafikeng alone. The operations was carried out by 54 officers and of the vehicles stopped, only 78 vehicles were not charged.

This brings to a total of 423 summonses issued for variety of infractions with a total monetary value of over four hundred and fifty thousand Rands.

The Acting Director for Road Traffic Management in the Department of Community Safety and Transport Management, Mr Zenzile Mtshengu says this is part of a long term plan. Mr Mtshengu says there has been contraventions especially in the public transport where illegal operation was becoming rife. The operation which is to expanded to all districts of the Province aims to put measures in place for a better, efficient and reliable transport system.

“We began in Mahikeng this past weekend as noncompliance is becoming endemic including illegal operators. We are here as law enforcement to ensure that all operators comply and communities are served diligently,” said Mtshengu who pleaded with commuters and residents in general to use legalized transportation and desist from waiting at hiking spots.

“We plead with all travellers to utilize legalized transportation so that we are able to protect and save their lives on the road by ensuring compliance of all public transport operators”, said Mr Mtshengu.

“The use of legalized transport will avoid such inconveniences that some of them went through over the weekend when no stone was left unturned on illegal transportation and unroadworthy vehicles,” he added.

Having beefed up the team with Provincial Traffic Officers from other Districts for the weekend, public transport operation in Mahikeng, 11 unroadworthy taxis were discontinued. The infringements for which the summonses were issued were in relation to operating licenses, roadworthiness and drunken drinking.
